Community Public Service Announcements: August 13 - 26 Edition

As always, there's lots of exciting things coming up in the Hamilton area these next few weeks.

Summer Promenade, Tuesdays and Thursdays @ Noon in Gore Park

Every Tuesday and Thursday this summer, Gore Park will be hosting live music and food vendors. With 39 unique performances from talented local musicians, this free outdoor concert series is designed to be a fun event for the whole family.

Pop-Ups At Pier 8, various dates throughout August @ Pier 8

Funded by the city, this annual event series works to bring community together through fun and inclusive events. This year, the events include, but are not limited to, two outdoor movie nights (on Aug. 13 and 20), an ABBA dance party (on Aug. 23) and a vintage market (on Aug. 24). All events are free. 73 'Til Infinity, various dates and locations throughout August

Put on by Josh Taylor & Defining Movement Dance and the City of Hamilton and featuring various genres of music and dance styles in a series of performances and dance battles alongside live DJs, these free events will bring attendees a classic block party vibe right in Hamilton's downtown core. Hamilton Literary Awards, submissions due Aug. 15

Hamilton's annual literary awards recognizes and celebrates local authors from the Greater Hamilton Area and Six Nations of the Grand River. Submissions are currently open for all four categories (Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, Children's Literature) and the Kerry Schooley Book Award. The Lightning Thief: A Percy Jackson Musical, Aug. 15 - 17 @ 7:00 p.m. & Aug. 17 @ 2:00 p.m. at the Gasworks Theatre

Put on by the Curtain Call Performing Arts Company, the show promises to be enjoyable for everyone of all ages. The cast cast of this performance is made up of teens and young adults who participated in the group's intensive summer musical theatre programming, which aims to give participants a professional theatre experience in a fast pace and supportive environment. This is a ticketed event and tickets can be purchased at the company's website.

Dundas Cactus Festival, Aug. 16 - 18 @ King St. in Dundas

The 49th annual Dundas Cactus Festival kicks off this month and will feature over a hundred vendors, a car show, escape rooms, and a teddy bear picnic as well as live music from local artists. This street festival is free to attend and all are welcome. For more information and the full schedule, visit the festival's website.

Boots in the Creek, Aug. 16-17 @ 40 King St. East in Stoney Creek

Boots in the Creek is a free, two-day Country Music Festival in downtown Stoney Creek showcasing music, culture, performances, food, drink, and local businesses. The Boots in the Creek Committee, with the help of the Stoney Creek BIA is putting together this fun-filled day for family and friends to come together along King St E from August 16/17th.

Singer-Songwriter Open Mic Night, Aug. 17 @ 3:00 p.m. at the Casbah Lounge

Hosted by local songwriter and playwright, Will Gillespie, everyone is welcome at this open mic event, whether you're a performer excited to try out some new songs, or just hoping to be part of the audience cheering them on. There is no charge for this event.

The Vaniers, Lost Faculty and Animal Boy concert, Aug. 24 @ 8:00 p.m. at Mills Hardware

This three part concert features some local talent from across Southern Ontario: the Vaniers, a Toronto rock trio; Lost Faculty, a Hamilton power pop and indie rock band; and Animal Boy, a Guelph-based indie punk group. Tickets can be purchased through Sonic Unyon's website.

Sounds Gay!, Aug. 28 @ 7:00 p.m. at the Casbah Lounge

Hosted by local musician Nim Agalawatte, this monthly series celebrates and holds space for Hamilton's 2SLGBTQIA+ musicians and singer-songwriters. Visit their Instagram page for more information.
