The brain is composed of gray matter (neurons) and white matter (axons, or the tracts that connect neurons together). The integrity of intracortical myelin (which is the fatty white substance that surrounds the axons) has been shown to be associated with some forms of mental illness. Vanessa Morris, a 2nd year PhD candidate in the Neuroscience Graduate Program wants to conduct one of the first studies to determine the association between intracortical myelin and alcohol and drug use disorders. Tune in to learn more about the imaging and neurocognitive tasks that Vanessa's research involves and her reason for adding three minutes to her daily walks!
